How to do the common things in Deskathon, and how to reach us when something isn’t right.

Contact us

Email

Tell us your Deskathon version (Settings › About), your macOS version, and what happened. We reply as soon as we reasonably can. You can also choose Feedback in the sidebar of Deskathon’s window.

Questions about a payment or a refund go to Apple, which handles every App Store purchase: reportaproblem.apple.com.

Export your data

  1. Open Deskathon, choose Settings in the sidebar (or press ⌘,) and choose Privacy & Data.
  2. Click Export CSV… and choose where to save the file.

The file has one row per hour: the date and hour, the display, distance in meters, left, right and other clicks, scroll distance and sessions, and key presses if keyboard counting was ever on. Any spreadsheet app can open it. Export is free.

Erase your data

  1. Open Settings and choose Privacy & Data.
  2. Click Erase All Data… and confirm.

This removes every count and the app’s backup copies of them, and restarts your lifetime totals. It can’t be undone, so export first if you want a copy. Your display size corrections are kept.

Moving Deskathon to the Trash removes the app, but macOS may keep its data folder. Erase your data first if you want your statistics gone too.

Turn keyboard counting off

  1. Open Settings and choose Keyboard.
  2. Turn keyboard counting off. Counting stops at once.
  3. Deskathon asks whether to keep your key counts or delete them. Keep is the default.

You can delete key counts at any time with Delete Keyboard Counts… in the same pane. Pointer, click and scroll data aren’t touched.

To remove the permission too, open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring and turn Deskathon off. Deskathon then stops counting keys and doesn’t ask again on its own.

Diagnostics and feedback

Deskathon makes no network connections unless you use one of these, and none of them include your distances, counts or heat maps. The switches are in Settings › Privacy & Data, under Sharing with VPO Labs; Privacy Options… is under Sent from this Mac.

  • Feedback, in the sidebar of Deskathon’s window, is where you write to us. Nothing is sent until you press Send.
  • Auto-send crash reports is off by default. Off means Deskathon asks after each crash, shows what the report contains, and sends it only if you say yes. On sends reports without asking.
  • Share anonymous usage is off by default. On, it sends which features are used, never distances, counts or heat maps.
  • Privacy Options… opens a window with Send error and hang reports (off by default), the crash choice (Ask each time, Send automatically, Never send), See Usage Data…, Reset Identifiers…, Export My Data… and Delete My Data….

In versions of Deskathon that can’t send these reports, the section says so and has no switches, and Write to Us on the Feedback page opens an email in your mail app instead. To have reports you sent removed, use Delete My Data… there, or email support@vpolabs.com. The privacy policy lists exactly what each report holds and how long it’s kept.

Restore Pro

Reinstalled Deskathon or moved to a new Mac? Open Settings, choose Pro and click Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought Pro with.

Family Sharing is on for Pro. If someone in your family group bought it, open Deskathon on your Mac while signed in with your own Apple Account and use Restore Purchases if Pro doesn’t unlock on its own.

Fix a display’s size

Deskathon turns pointer movement into distance using the size each display reports to macOS. Some TVs, projectors and docks report the wrong size. If a display’s distance looks off:

  1. Open Settings and choose Displays.
  2. Enter the display’s diagonal in inches or centimeters.

The correction applies from then on. Distance already counted stays as measured. Use Detected Size undoes the correction.

Pause counting

Click Deskathon in the menu bar, click Pause and choose Pause for 1 Hour, Pause Until Tomorrow or Pause Until I Resume. The same choices are in Settings › Privacy & Data. Nothing is counted while Deskathon is paused, and it doesn’t fill in the gap afterwards.

Show the welcome again

The short welcome you saw on first launch shows how Deskathon counts distance, clicks and scroll, and lets you choose units and open at login. To see it again, open Settings, choose About and click Show Again next to Welcome screens.

Common questions

Why does macOS mention “keystrokes from any application”?

That’s Apple’s standard text for the Input Monitoring permission, the same for apps that count keys and apps that record them. macOS shows it only if you turn on keyboard counting. Deskathon only counts how many keys you press per hour and never reads which key.

I said no to Input Monitoring. Can I change my mind?

Yes. Deskathon doesn’t ask again on its own. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring and turn Deskathon on. The Open System Settings button in Settings › Keyboard takes you there. Everything else works without it.

Which languages does Deskathon speak?

English, Romanian, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. It uses your Mac’s language. To use a different one for Deskathon only, open Settings › General and choose it under App language. The window, the menu bar panel and the widgets switch at once; menus and Feedback follow the next time Deskathon opens.

My widget shows an older number.

macOS limits how often widgets refresh while Deskathon is in the background. Widgets show “Updated N min ago” once they’re more than 15 minutes old. Open Deskathon from the menu bar and the Small widget catches up within a minute.

Does it count when Deskathon isn’t running?

No. Deskathon counts only while it’s open. Turn on Open at login in Settings › General so it starts with your Mac.

I can’t see Deskathon in the menu bar.

On a crowded menu bar, macOS can hide items behind the camera housing or off the edge. Quit a few menu bar apps, or set Menu bar text to None (icon only) in Settings › General so the item takes less room.

Where is my data stored?

On your Mac, in Deskathon’s own folder in your user account. It isn’t synced to iCloud or sent to us. See the privacy policy for the details.
