The basics
What does Deskathon count?
How far your pointer travels, your left, right and other clicks, and how far you scroll. If you turn it on, it also counts how many keys you press each hour. Everything is counted on this Mac only. See How counting works.
What do I need?
macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Apple silicon or Intel, and any mouse or trackpad.
Does it count when Deskathon isn’t running?
No. Deskathon counts only while it’s open. Turn on Open at login in Settings › General so it starts with your Mac. See Get started.
Why is there no Dock icon?
Deskathon lives in the menu bar. If you want a Dock icon too, turn on Show in Dock in Settings › General.
Which languages does Deskathon speak?
English (US and UK), Romanian, German, French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. It uses your Mac’s language. To use a different one for Deskathon only, open Settings › General and choose it under App language. The main window, the panel and the widgets switch at once; menus and Feedback follow the next time Deskathon opens.
What are landmarks and trips?
Landmarks put your distance in perspective, for example “about 1.3 times the Brooklyn Bridge”. Trips, such as London to Paris, measure your lifetime distance as a journey. Both are free. See Lifetime, landmarks and trips.
Privacy
Does Deskathon connect to the internet?
Only for these: sending feedback, the optional usage and crash-report switches, and the App Store, which Deskathon asks for the price when you open the Pro sheet or Settings › Pro, and when you buy or restore Pro. None of these carries your distances, counts or heat maps. See Privacy and your data.
Where is my data stored?
On your Mac, in Deskathon’s own folder in your user account. It isn’t synced to iCloud or sent to us. Settings › Privacy & Data has a Show in Finder button, and the privacy policy has the details.
Does Deskathon see what is on my screen?
No. The heat map records only where the pointer was, never what was on screen. See Heat Map.
Why would Deskathon ask for Input Monitoring?
Only if you turn on keyboard counting. macOS uses the same wording for every app with this permission, including “keystrokes from any application”. Deskathon only counts how many keys you press per hour and never reads which key. Say no, and everything else works. See Keyboard counting.
I said no to Input Monitoring. Can I change my mind?
Yes. Deskathon doesn’t ask again on its own. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring and turn Deskathon on. The Open System Settings button in Settings › Keyboard takes you there.
How do I export or erase my data?
Open Settings › Privacy & Data. Export CSV… saves one row per hour, and it’s free. Erase All Data… removes every count and restarts Lifetime, and it can’t be undone, so export first if you want a copy.
Can I stop counting for a while?
Yes. Click Pause in the panel and choose Pause for 1 Hour, Pause Until Tomorrow or Pause Until I Resume. Nothing is counted while paused, and Deskathon doesn’t fill in the gap.
Counting
How accurate is the distance?
It uses the physical size each display reports to macOS. If a display reports the wrong size, turn off Use detected size and enter its diagonal in Settings › Displays. Distance already counted stays as measured.
Does it work with more than one display?
Yes. Every display counts at its own scale and gets its own heat map. See How counting works.
Does it count while my Mac sleeps or is locked?
No. Nothing is counted while the Mac sleeps, while the screen is locked or while another user’s session is in front.
Why is the number in the menu bar slightly lower than in the panel?
The menu bar cuts digits off instead of rounding them, so the number only counts forward. With Short numbers on, it shows fewer digits to stay narrow next to the notch.
Pro
Is Pro a subscription?
No. It’s a one-time in-app purchase with Family Sharing. The App Store shows the price for your country. See Deskathon Pro.
What is free, and what does Pro add?
Counting, the menu bar item and panel, Today, Lifetime, the last 7 days of History, today’s heat map, the Small widget, the Today share card, export, erase and pause are free. Pro shows all the days you have recorded, with Month and Year views and Records, heat maps for past days, more share cards, and the Medium and Large widgets. Deskathon keeps your full history either way.
How do I restore Pro on a new Mac?
Open Settings › Pro and click Restore Purchases, signed in with the Apple Account you bought Pro with. If someone in your family group bought it, use your own Apple Account and click Restore Purchases if Pro doesn’t unlock on its own.
Menu bar and widgets
I can’t see Deskathon in the menu bar.
On a crowded menu bar, macOS can hide items behind the camera housing or off the edge. Quit a few menu bar apps, or set Menu bar text to None (icon only) in Settings › General so the item takes less room. See I can’t see the menu bar icon.
My widget shows an older number.
macOS limits how often widgets refresh while Deskathon is in the background. Widgets show “Updated N min ago” once they’re more than 15 minutes old. Open Deskathon and your widgets catch up within a minute. See Widgets.
