Glossary

The words Deskathon uses, in one place.

Distance and comparisons

DistanceHow far your pointer has traveled, worked out from the physical size of each display. Shown in meters and kilometers, or feet and miles, as you choose in Settings › General › Units.
OdometerThe rolling digits that show today’s distance, as on a car’s dashboard.
LandmarkA real-world length that puts your distance in perspective, such as “≈ 1.5× Burj Khalifa”. There are ten, from an Olympic pool (50 m) to the Moon. Landmarks are free. See Lifetime, landmarks and trips.
TripA journey, such as London → Paris (344 km), that your lifetime distance is measured against. The Lifetime tab shows the current one.
LifetimeEverything counted since Deskathon started, or since the last time you chose Erase All Data….
Last 7 daysA rolling window that ends today. It isn’t a calendar week.

Counting

Tracked dayA day with at least one count. The first tracked day is where the day arrows stop when you go back. Days tracked on the Lifetime tab counts these days.
ClicksLeft, right and other clicks. Deskathon counts them and records where they happened on a display, never what was under the pointer.
Scroll distanceHow far you scroll, measured like distance and shown with a comparison in pages.
PageThe unit for scroll comparisons: an A4 sheet, 29.7 cm tall, with metric units, or a US Letter sheet, 11 in tall, with imperial units.
Scroll sessionA stretch of scrolling. It ends after 2 seconds without scrolling.
JumpA pointer movement longer than a third of the larger display’s longer side. Deskathon ignores it, because it isn’t movement you made. See How counting works.
DiagonalA display’s size measured corner to corner, without the bezel. Deskathon reads it from the display and lets you correct it in Settings › Displays.
Mirrored displaysDisplays that show the same picture. They count once.
PauseStops counting for 1 hour, until tomorrow or until you resume. The pause survives a restart.
Short numbersA setting that shows the menu bar figure with fewer digits, for example 2.3 km instead of 2.31 km.

Keyboard counting

Keyboard countingAn optional setting that counts how many keys you press each hour. Never which keys, and never what you type. It is off until you turn it on.
Input MonitoringThe macOS permission that keyboard counting needs. You allow it in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring.
Secure InputA macOS mode that hides key presses from other apps, for example while you type in a password field. Deskathon doesn’t count keys while it is on, and resumes on its own.
Typed pageAn estimate used on the Keyboard tab. One page is 1,800 key presses.
